The Wallow Fire began on 9 May, has consumed 538,043 acres and is 93 percent contained as of this morning. 218 residences (down from a peak of 2,748 residences) remain threatened, with five damaged, and 32 destroyed. There were 2,347 firefighting personnel assigned to this fire with an expected full containment date of 15 July. All mandatory evacuations have been lifted.
GCC Red Cross response included opening a shelter on 2 June and closed on 14 June. Overnight Stays (cumulative): 408, Shelter Registrations (cumulative): 846. Partner organizations included The Salvation Army providing meals and Southern Baptist providing a portable shower unit. The generosity of corporate and in-kind donations were utilized to provide evacuees with needed hygiene items, snacks and water – distributed at the shelter and through the use of ERV to camp sites.
I returned from the Wallow Fire Shelter after five days on good hard work. The on the ground experience helped me reinforce my Logistics and ARC training in times of disaster. The stories, people, and experiences from those quick five days will serve me in all my adventure to come!
